Part 8: A Ghostly Discovery

THERE WAS NO TIME TO intervene in the dismemberment of the poor man lying on the operating table now. If I had any hope of survival there was but one option: run! The ghostly figure lunged towards me, and the pungent gaseous odor that he exuded nearly overwhelmed me. I managed to scramble away from him and dash back down the hallway, with the figure hot on my heels!

What sort of ridiculous world am I living in, I asked myself as I ran. This is by far the worst Roblox server I have ever been on!

I threw a quick glance over my shoulder. The ghost was still following closely behind me. Once again, I was in a race for my life, but this time I had no one to help me out, and I had no clue where I was going. As I ran for all I was worth I forced my mind to try and think rationally. I could figure this out! The foul-smelling odor coming off of the ghost wafted into my nostrils, and suddenly, light bulbs began to slowly flicker on in my mind.

I thought about the comments that I had heard moments ago in the surgery room. Nurse Valentina had asked about a nerve gas of some sort. Then I thought about the nasty smell that seemed to always be present near these ghosts. Could they be connected? Surely not...

Another light bulb flashed in my mind. One of my companions had mentioned that the ghosts seemed to hang out near the ventilation ducts! Could the nerve gas have been distributed through them? It would explain why we had only ever seen the ghost in the halls, which is the only place where the air ducts are located. But that would mean that these floating specters are simply mirages, formed on account of the nerve gas people inhale in the halls....

Right?

A third light bulb began to glow in my head. Up to now, I had yet to actually see a ghost touch, someone! Sure, they have been roaming the halls, but perhaps they are indeed mere figments of our imaginations, thanks to the toxic fumes! Which would mean, that the thing behind me was completely harmless?

Unfortunately, there was only one real way to test this theory.

“Oh my gosh,” I muttered to myself. “this has got to be the biggest mistake I have ever made!”

I stopped running. Cringing internally, I turned to face the ghost who was still rushing towards me. The spectral figure stretched out both of its arms as it approached, straining to grab me. I closed my eyes tightly and winced, anticipating the feeling of icy hands on my body.

I waited, but nothing happened.

After several seconds I opened one eye and looked around. To my complete shock and amazement, the ghost was now floating ON me! The figure had completely wrapped around me, and yet I felt nothing, and still had total freedom of movement!

“It isn't real!” I shouted hysterically. “It's all been in our heads!”

Words cannot express how overjoyed I was at this fact.
